VEGF: A modifier of the del122q11 (DiGeorge) syndrome?

Article Abstract:

Research findings in mouse, fish and human suggest that the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) modifies cardiovascular birth defects in the hemizygous deletion of chromosome del22q11 syndrome. The DiGeorge syndrome comprises of life-threatening cardiovascular birth defects, including thymic, parathyroid, craniofacial origin, in infants.

Impaired myocardial angiogenesis and eschemic cardiomyopathy in mice lacking the vascular endothelial growth factor isoforms VEGF(sub.164) and VEGF(sub.188)

Article Abstract:

In the absence of vascular endothelial growth factor genes, VEGF(sub.164) and VEGF(sub.188), in mice, impaired myocardial angiogenesis is seen as are reduced myocardial perfusion and fatal ischemic cardiomyopathy. The pursuit of gene therapy strategies of ischemic heart disease led researchers to generate the mice using targeted embryonic stem cells.
