Improving clinical practice

Article Abstract:

The increasing emphasis on clinical effectiveness in the UK National Health Service offers the opportunity for nurses to examine their practices, and to improve them if appropriate. Nurses who are examining the clinical effectiveness of an intervention will need to find out about other approaches. They may use the Internet and other information resources or they may make contacts through their local networks. They will probably find variations in practice but they should be aware that there may be valid reasons for the variation.

The clinical effectiveness process

Article Abstract:

The clinical effectiveness approach to nursing practice aims to ensure that an intervention is the best possible for the circumstances. This approach will involve finding out about best practice, implementing it into local clinical practice, and evaluating it in operation. The approach offers benefits to patients, including consistent, effective care, it provides a framework for nurses to evaluate practice, and it helps the National Health Service to provide good quality, cost-effective care at all locations.

Are nurses responsible for disseminating their work?

Article Abstract:

Two nurses put forward opposing arguments concerning the dissemination of work by nurses. One argument is that evidence based practice benefits patients and is cost effective whereas the other is concerned with the administrative elements of nursing which are of no benefit to others.
