Increased capillary permiability in systemic sclerosis: help or hindrance

Article Abstract:

The increase in capillary permeability seen in systemic sclerosis (SSc) may be a compensatory mechanism rather than pathological. The symptoms of SSc result from capillary abnormalities that reduce blood flow to tissues. Increased capillary permeability to small molecules has been believed to be part of the disease process. However, cold, which is known to have negative effects, decreases capillary permeability, and medications known have benefits increase capillary permeability. This suggests that increased capillary permeability may be an adaptive response to enhance damaged capillary function.

Ultrasonography in rheumatology: an evolving technique

Article Abstract:

Ultrasonography (US) can be used effectively in the clinical and anatomical assessment of rheumatoid arthritis patients. US noninvasively produces images of joints and joint spaces, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and other anatomic structures. Collections of fluid, such as effusions and cysts, are well-visualized by US. US is an underutilized diagnostic tool in rheumatology, but physician interest is growing.

Synovitis of small joints: sonographic guided diagnostic and therapeutic approach

Article Abstract:

The authors present a largely pictorial essay which describes the technique of using ultrasound imaging technology to do exacting diagnoses of painful small joints, showing tendons, bones, synovial fluid areas and such with extreme clarity. They use the example of bones of the hand to demonstrate. They point out that before this technology was available, such accurate diagnosis was not possible.
