Injuries among health care staff remain high

Article Abstract:

The Health and Safety Executive has published a guide to patient manual handling called 'Guidance on Manual Handling of Loads in the Health Service.' Over 8,500 staff a year suffer from injuries caused by manual handling accidents. Staff's work is physically demanding and a wide variation of handling tasks are undertaken. The guide states that employers should examine tasks, loads, working environments and individuals capabilities. Changes could be costly, such as changing layout and increasing staff numbers. However, civil claims against employers and the loss of skilled staff has also been financially demanding.
