Inner strength

Article Abstract:

Breast reconstruction can be a great help to women who have undergone a mastectomy. The breast care nurse is often the person responsible for suggesting this option, but women should be under no pressure to undergo reconstructive surgery. The surgeon may use an implant or tissue taken from another part of the patient's body. Undertaking the work immediately after a mastectomy is cheaper, and has more psychological benefits, than delaying the surgery. Experts maintain that it does not create difficulties in the detection or management of cancer recurrences.

The search for the key to Alzheimer's

Article Abstract:

A lot of research is being carried out into the causes of Alzheimer's disease and it is believed that a combination of genes and environmental factors may be to blame. Aluminium is also a possible factor. Genetic screening can now indicate those people with an inherited risk of developing the disease, and better scanning technology allows doctors to diagnose the disease before any symptoms have begun. Drug treatments for Alzheimer's disease have come onto the market in 1997 and they are of some benefit to people in the early stages.

Independent means

Article Abstract:

The independent health care sector in the United Kingdom employed close to 500,000 in 1996, an increase of 56 percent over 1995. Nurses, especially those in the mental health field, choose independent care over the National Health Service or local health service because of better pay and wider opportunities for personal development. Independent care is increasing rapidly, accommodating as many as 443,000 patients needing health or social care. Medium-security forensic psychiatric services are especially needed.
