Integrating prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission into routine antenatal care: The key to program expansion in Cameroon

Article Abstract:

The Cameroon Bapist Convention Health Board implemented to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV-1 into routine antenatal care, achieved high uptake of rapid HIV testing and posttest counseling on the same day, implemented routine uses on peripartum single-dose NVP for HIV-positive mothers and their infants in collaboration with the National AIDS Program is described. Consistent training and programmatic support contributed to rapid upscaling and high uptake counseling rates.

Cost-effectiveness of HIV rescreening during late pregnancy to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission in South Africa and other resource-limited settings

Article Abstract:

A decision analysis model, from a health care system perspective, is used to assess the cost-effectiveness of HIV rescreening during the late pregnancy to prevent perinatal HIV transmission in South Africa, a country with high HIV prevalence and incidence among pregnant women. The study is carried out with two different combinations of the two, the new HIV prenatal prophylactic and pediatric antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens, which are becoming widely available.

Transmission of Kaposi Sarcoma-associated herpesvirus between mothers and children in a South African population

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to assess whether Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) with or without HIV coinfection in South African mothers is associated with higher KSHV seropositivity in their children. Although KSHV seroprevalence was significantly higher in children and mothers who were infected with HIV, the HIV status of the mother was only marginally associated with an increased risk of KSHV seropositivity in the child.
