International variability in ages at menarche, first livebirth, and menopause

Article Abstract:

The occurrences and timing of birth-related events such as menarche, first birth, and menopause are important events in a woman's life. This study outlines the variability in reproductive factors across European, the Americas, and Australian populations. Researchers sampled 18,997 women from 11 countries and found that women in general reach menarche at age 14, deliver the first baby 8 at age 22, and reach menopause at 50 years of age. Other factors are also listed in the article.

Lifetimes exposure to environmental tobacco smoke among urban women: differences by socioeconomic class

Article Abstract:

Researchers conducted a study to determine lifetime exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) among urban women in relation to their sociodemographic factors. A sample of 1,883 women from Switzerland were selected to answer interview questions on lifetime ETS exposure. Throughout their lifetime, work exposure accounted for the greatest average intensity followed by home. Women from lower socioeconomic classes were more at risk because of work exposure and its intensity.

Timing of menopause, reproductive years, and bone mineral density: a cross-sectional study of postmenopausal Japanese women

Article Abstract:

Researchers conducted a study to examine the relationship between the timing of menopause and reproductive period with mineral density of the second metacarpal bone in postmenopausal Japanese women. The study found that postmenopausal Japanese who experienced late menopause and more reproductive years had decreased risk of low bone mineral density and were less prone to suffer from osteoporosis.
