Interventions used by staff nurses to manage "difficult" patients

Article Abstract:

Patients may react to the stress of being hospitalized by angry, abusive and/or uncooperative behavior. Such patients are labeled "difficult," and nurses must learn appropriate methods of dealing with them. Difficult patients may be scared or feel a loss of control. They make disproportionate demands on nursing time. Nurses should not use power, defensiveness or aggression in response to difficult patients.

Nursing and technology: a dialectic

Article Abstract:

Technology can increase the nurse's knowledge and skill without interfering in the caring relationship between nurse and patient. However, that occurs only when the technology supports nursing function rather than attempts to replace it, is user friendly, and can be used flexibly by nurses with varying levels of knowledge and experience.
