Iodine status, thyroid function and pregnancy: study of Swedish and Sudanese women

Article Abstract:

A study conducted on pregnant Sudanese and Swedish women was undertaken to determine the effects of pregnancy on thyroid hormone homeostasis with variable iodine supply. Urine and blood samples were taken to analyze their urinary iodine output. Results revealed that urinary iodine output were higher among Swedish women compared to their Sudanese counterparts. Further evidence suggests that urinary iodine alone is insufficient to gauge the capacity of a person to utilize available iodine supply. Iodine availability before and during pregnancy determines mechanism of thyroid gland response.
