Iron balance in menstruating women

Article Abstract:

Reanalysis of the data on iron balance in 203 38-year-old women, originally surveyed in 1968-1969 in Goteborg, Sweden, revealed inverse correlations between iron absorption and measures of iron status, including serum ferritin and transferrin saturation levels. The regulation of iron absorption was determined to be a non-stop process to meet the low or high iron requirements of the subjects.

Iron stores in man in relation to diet and iron requirements

Article Abstract:

Iron stores in individuals and their rates of changes in relation to dietary iron intake and bioavailability as well as iron requirements were investigated. Amounts of stored iron and rate of growth of such stores in participants were calculated under different conditions. Results showed that differences in dietary iron intake and bioavailability and iron requirements affect the amounts of iron stores in the human body. Furthermore, there is a tendency for fast growth of iron stores during the first year and a slowdown in growth rate for the second and third years.
