Is a medical savings account in your future?

Article Abstract:

Proposed federal legislation may enable Medicare beneficiaries to open medical savings accounts to complement catastrophic coverage. The new Medisave plan would supposedly save Medicare money by having beneficiaries pay for a high deductible and non-catastrophic health care costs. Money drawn from the medical savings account would not be taxable if spent on medical expenses or included in the estate of a deceased beneficiary. Younger, healthier Americans may be more likely to select such a plan.

Providers as health insurers?

Article Abstract:

Debate continues about the regulation of a recent form of health care organization called provider-sponsored organizations (PSOs). PSOs are networks of health care providers that deliver health services and contract directly with a variety of client groups, possibly including Medicare and Medicaid. Issues to be resolved include what level of government will regulate PSOs, what percentage of patients can be on federal assistance, and how much money PSOs must have in reserve.

Is that HMO federally qualified?

Article Abstract:

Many HMOs seek federal qualification in order to compete for employer contracts. About 65% are federally qualified. Qualification is a lengthy process that is overseen by the Health Care Financing Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services. The HMO must provide background on all its managers as well as a copy of its financial statements and marketing plans. It must also agree to provide comprehensive basic services that include preventive health.
