Drugs for hypertension

Article Abstract:

Most antihypertensive drugs are diuretics, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors or angiotensin receptor antagonists. Studies have shown that diuretics and beta blockers alone can lower mortality rates from hypertension. However, black patients do not respond as well to beta blockers. Diabetics may benefit from ACE inhibitors, as can patients with congestive heart failure. Calcium channel blockers may benefit people with elevated blood lipid levels. Hypertension treatment should be tailored to the individual patient and if one class of drugs is not effective, another class can be chosen.
