Keys to the ideal home

Article Abstract:

The ageing population means that people are living longer and many more older people are becoming dependant on their families or the health service. Those who are unable to cope with their own homes are faced with the dilemma of finding a suitable nursing or residential home. Most old people need to be looked after in a comfortable, friendly atmosphere where they can keep their dignity and where they feel safe.

Acute confusion

Article Abstract:

Nurses need to follow detailed and structured observation practices in order to assess and manage acutely confused patients. The causes of the confusion must be quickly determined in order to ensure that no further stress is caused, and all background information must be obtained if the patient is to be properly cared for. The means of dealing with acute confusion are discussed.

Adjustment to bereavement and loss in older people

Article Abstract:

The different approaches to grief and loss adjustment by medical authors and researchers are valuable to practitioners in understanding the support needs of older people. Grieving in older people is often brought about by social and physical losses, the loss of a friend or a pet. Complications may occur if an older person has to be isolated or hospitalised.
