Knowledge for practice

Article Abstract:

Continuity of care from a qualified nurse is one of the principles behind Standard 8 of the Dept. of Health's Patient's Charter implemented in Apr. 1992, and informs the way in which the delivery of nursing care is organised. Standard 8 provides for a named, qualified nurse, midwife or health visitor to be responsible for a patient's nursing or midwifery care. Named nurses need to ensure that patients know who they are and should support the development of a relationship based on mutual trust and shared decision-making. Named nurses must also be accountable for their actions.

Shared ownership: Premier Health NHS Trust has reorganized its management structure to make it more user-friendly

Article Abstract:

Premier Health NHS Trust is a UK National Health Service health-care provider that has reorganized its management functions in order to create a needs-led system rather than a services-led system. The management structure has been simplified, with the concept of self-directed, self-managed nursing teams being introduced. Such self-managed teams benefit from controlling their own budgets and resources.
