Lack of association between early exposure to cow's milk protein and beta-cell autoimmunity: Diabetes Autoimmunity Study in the Young (DAISY)

Article Abstract:

There appears to be no relationship between exposure to cow's milk and the development of autoantibodies against pancreatic beta cells. Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is believed to be caused by an autoimmune attack against beta cells. Researchers solicited infant diet histories from the parents of 18 children between 9 months and 7 years who had elevated blood levels of antibodies against the pancreatic beta cell. The children all had a first-degree relative with IDDM. These children were no more likely to have drunk cow's milk as infants than 153 healthy children who did not have beta cell autoantibodies.

Timing of initial cereal exposure in infancy and risk of islet autoimmunity

Article Abstract:

Children who are exposed to cereal before the age of three months and after the age of seven months may have an increased risk of developing type 1, or juvenile-onset, diabetes. This was the conclusion of a study of 1,183 children. The risk was greater in children who had a specific gene called HLA-DRB1*03/04, DQB8.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid intake and islet autoimmunity in children at increased risk for type 1 diabetes

Article Abstract:

The association of intakes of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids with the development of islet autoimmunity (IA) in children is examined. Dietary intake of omega 3 fatty acids is found linked with reduced risk of IA in children and increased genetic risk of type 1 diabetes.
