Large differences in nutritional status between fully weaned and partially breast fed children beyond the age of 12 months

Article Abstract:

The nutritional status of 500 Ghanaian infants between the age of 13 and 36 months was examined to determine if breastfeeding after the first year of life provided any added protection against disease. Results showed that there was little evidence to suggest that infants breastfed after their first year enjoyed any further protection from infection. Morever, results showed that infants who received prolonged breasfeeding into their second and third year of life were more likely to have lower nutritional status than infants that were totally weaned by the end of their first year.

Effects of oat gum on blood cholesterol levels in healthy young men

Article Abstract:

In a metabolically controlled cross-over experiment, 14 young healthy men's diets were supplemented with beta-glucan in the form of gum oat showed no statistical effect of oat gum on the total blood cholesterol content, or on low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides content. However the high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol content increased. Since the effect of beta-glucan can only be determined by measuring the viscosity of the beta-glucan solutions, the increase in the viscosity of the beta-glucan in the gut might decrease total serum cholesterol levels.

Infant-feeding patterns are related to blood cholesterol concentration in prepubertal children aged 5-11 y: The Fleurbaix-Laventie Ville Sante study

Article Abstract:

Data on prepubertal children aged 5-11 years from the Fleurbaix Laventie Ville Sante study was evaluated to determine if there was a link between infant diet and blood cholesterol concentration. The results indicate that diet in infancy may have longstanding effects on lipid metabolism.
