Lawsuit threatens free speech on clinical topics

Article Abstract:

Over 3,000 plaintiffs filed a lawsuit against 50 defendants, which includes the American Assn of Neurological Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Lawyers for the plaintiffs allege that the medical societies engaged in illegal marketing and promotions of the pedicle screw when the societies discussed the medical device in an educational course. The lawsuit is without merit, since it infringes on medical societies' First Amendment rights to disseminate information about medical devices.

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Association's Consortium for Study of the Federation voted on several changes during its Oct 1995 meeting in Chicago, IL. Among the group's decisions was that the membership of special societies will now be represented in proportion to their membership in the AMA House of Delegates and that provisions should be made for the representation of demographic groups and kinds of medical practices.
