Life begins at 50

Article Abstract:

The UK National Health Service (NHS) will be celebrating its 50th anniversary during 1998 and the government's vision for its future appears to include more opportunities for nurses. Government initiatives in Dec 1997 included the sanctioning of nurse-led primary care trials and the announcement of a telephone helpline to be staffed by nurses, and, in 1998, nurses will have the opportunity to comment on the future of their profession. The government will publish these comments, which will form a basis for strategy, during NHS anniversary celebrations in Jul 1998.

In strategy we trust

Article Abstract:

Ideas for new developments in the UK National Health Service (NHS) have to fit into overall strategies if they are ever to be implemented. The main strategy in the NHS continues to be a movement towards primary and community health care and away from hospital-based services. It is unlikely, therefore, that hospital-based plans to improve patient care will receive funding, whilst ideas focusing on primary care may be implemented despite lack of evidence supporting their value.
