Local health plan to merge with Colorado Blue Cross

Article Abstract:

HSI Health Plans Inc. is merging with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Colorado because the nonprofit entity needs a big partner, says HSI chief exec Chuck Mabry. The Colorado Blues, which is converting to for-profit status, has 384,000 members, compared with 21,000 for HSI. HSI doctors and patients have expressed concern about the merger. Colorado's Department of Insurance is likely to schedule a public hearing on the planned deal, according to Maryellen Wagner, deputy insurance commissioner.

Merger of D.C., Maryland Blues plans gets regulatory OK

Article Abstract:

Insurance regulators in the District of Columbia and Maryland have approved the merger of Group Hospitality and Medical Services Inc (Blue Cross Blue Shield of the National Capital Area) and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maryland. The companies must meet certain conditions, however. The approval is noteworthy, in that few proposed Blues plan mergers have been granted approval since Jan 1997.
