Management of pleural drains

Article Abstract:

Nurses should understand the mechanism and physiology of pleural drains so they can detect malfunctions with the equipment and if their patients develop further problems. A pleural drain is used to drain the pleural membranes and restore normal respirations. The pleural membranes cease to function adequately when a variety of materials enter intrapleural spaces, such as blood. An increased amount of pleural fluid will cause dysponea. The nurse should observe patients with chest tubes carefully, to ensure the absence of infection and the drainage equipment is working satisfactorily.
