Mass. faces chaos with new individual insurance law

Article Abstract:

Residents of Massachusetts are guaranteed the right to purchase health insurance coverage, according to a new law that went into effect on Jan 1, 1998. Previously insurers had denied coverage to persons under vague definitions of 'pre-existing conditions.' Several carriers left the market, and some companies set unaffordable prices for individual policies. The state legislature will consider whether to modify the current law, perhaps by offering subsidies to persons unable to pay for coverage.

Win may not bring victory for Wash. insurance chief

Article Abstract:

Washington State Insurance Commissioner Deborah Senn is expected to win re-election on Nov 5, 1996. Insurance companies are not pleased because she has continued to enforce the remnants of a state health reform bill that was passed in 1993. The law requires insurance companies to give coverage to individuals with chronic or expensive illnesses. Lawsuits and countersuits are filed constantly over this legislation.
