Maternal and neonatal essential fatty acid status in phospholipids: an international comparative study

Article Abstract:

A longitudinal study was conducted to compare the essential fatty acid (EFA) status in plasma phospholipids during pregnancy and shortly after delivery among women from the Netherlands, Hungary, Finland, England and Ecuador. The results revealed that the reduction in maternal EFA status during pregnancy appears to be a normal physiological phenomenon and is not dependent on variations in dietary habits and ethnic origin. The functional implications of such pregnancy-associated reduction in maternal EFA status relevant to fetal and neonatal development are yet to be elucidated.

Relation between birth order and the maternal and neonatal docosahexaenoic acid status

Article Abstract:

The docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) status of mothers is lowered with every pregnancy, which could lead to reduced DHA status in newborns. Multigravidae mothers had much lower relative and absolute levels of DHA in the maternal plasma phospholipids than primigravidae mothers. The umbilical plasma of babies born from multigravidae mothers demonstrated a substantially higher DHA deficiency index and substantially lower DHA sufficiency index than the umbilical plasma of babies born from primigravidae mothers.

Leptin and phospholipid-esterified docosahexaenoic acid concentrations in plasma of women: observations during pregnancy and lactation

Article Abstract:

Research into n-3 fatty acid levels in pregnant and lactating women has found that total phospholipid fatty acids related to plasma leptin levels, but only in early pregnancy. Details of the findings are discussed.
