Mechanisms of abruption-induced premature rupture of the fetal membranes: Thrombin enhanced decidual matrix metalloproteinase-3 (stromelysin-1) expression

Article Abstract:

The thrombin and progestin effects on matrix metalloproteinase-3 expression in term decidual cells as a mechanism of abruption-related preterm delivery are evaluated. It is observed that abruption-generated thrombin promotes preterm delivery by mediating fetal membrane extracellular matrix degradation via enhanced decidual cell matrix metalloproteinase-3 expression, whereas progesterone blunts this thrombin-induced effect.

Three-dimensional ultrasound to differentiate epigastric heteropagus conjoined twins from a TRAP sequence

Article Abstract:

Differentiation of a twin reversed arterial perfusion (TRAP) sequence and a conjoined twin prenatally may be difficult due to a variety of reasons. A case where three-dimensional ultrasound proved particularly useful in diagnosing epigastric heteropagus conjoined twins is discussed.

Residency selection: should interviewers be given applicants' board scores?

Article Abstract:

Giving interviewers a medical residency applicant's test scores may bias their evaluation of the applicant based on a personal interview. Studies have shown that students who do well on some of the tests do not always make the best residents.
