Message from Toronto -- Deliver AIDS treatment and prevention

Article Abstract:

The theme 'time to deliver', of the XVI International AIDS Conference in Toronto in August 2006, reflected the fact that the growth of the pandemic is faster than its prevention and treatment. Approaches to the interrelated prevention and treatment of AIDS, in spite of inefficient health care systems and shortage of skilled health workers in many countries, are evaluated which include pre-exposure prophylaxis with antiretroviral drugs and cervical barriers.

Financial conflicts of interest and the Food and Drug Administration's Advisory Committees

Advisory committees to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) help the agency in making decisions about the approval of medications and medical devices among other issues. Membership on these committees is subject to detailed policies and procedures for managing potential conflicts of interest and for balancing possible conflicts against the agency's need for advisers with relevant scientific expertise.

Guidance for guidelines

Article Abstract:

Various approaches to improving the quality of clinical guidelines and minimizing the potential for inappropriate influences are discussed. It is believed that clinical practice guidelines would serve patients and physicians best if they were prepared with the necessary financial and methodologic support to ensure their quality.
