Improved antioxidant status among HIV-infected injecting drug users on potent antiretroviral therapy

Article Abstract:

HIV patients who take highly active antiretroviral therapy including a protease inhibitor have higher blood levels of antioxidants. This was the conclusion of a study of 175 HIV-positive and 210 HIV-negative drug addicts, which also found that the HIV-positive group did not have lower antioxidant levels than the HIV-negative group.

Improvement of anemia among HIV-infected injection drug users receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy

Article Abstract:

Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) can raise hemoglobin levels in HIV patients with anemia, according to a study of 205 HIV patients. This may occur because the patients eat better or because the drugs prevent the development of opportunistic infections and the anemia of chronic disease.

Micronutrient levels and HIV disease status in HIV-infected patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy in the nutrition for healthy living cohort

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the prevalence of low serum retinol, [alpha]-tocopherol, zinc, and selenium in HIV-infected subjects taking highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and to assess the association of micronutrient levels with HIV disease status. Low retinol, [alpha]-tocopherol, and selenium are uncommon in HIV-infected subjects in HAART.
