Mission possible

Article Abstract:

Physicians Ought to Care is an anti-smoking activist group dedicated to fighting tobacco companies and reducing smoking in the general public. For example, they videotape cigarette giveaways to children at county fairs and other events to use as evidence against drug companies. Other physicians conduct research on secondhand smoke or on children's recognition of the Joe Camel cigarette advertising cartoon character. The physicians feel that they have an obligation to work to stop the number one cause of death in the US, smoking, which is actively promoted by the cigarette industry.

The risks of change

Article Abstract:

Physicians in private practice who contemplate a career change should be aware of the stresses that this change entails. Those who actually make the transition might find themselves beset by feelings of low self-esteem, embarrassment and guilt, due to the lofty status granted to physicians by others. Before making a change, physicians should perform a two-step evaluation - first determining their needs, interests and skills and then gathering information about fields that interest them.

Is there life after private practice?

Article Abstract:

A growing number of physicians are leaving private practice because they want less stress, a smaller workload and more time with their families. The number of private practitioners declined between 1965 and 1990, dropping from 63.5% to 58.7%. Many seek salaried positions with health maintenance organizations. Consulting positions with Pharmaceutical firms provide another lucrative career alternative. Others works as physician-analysts, medical directors of banks and CEOs of hospitals.
