Mitochondrial abnormalities in HIV-infected lipoatrophic patients treated with antiretroviral agents

Article Abstract:

The relation between clinical lipoatrophy (LA) and mitochondrial abnormalities occurring in the muscle of HIV-infected patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is investigated. The investigation confirmed that LA in long-term nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors treated patients was associated with muscular mitochondrial dysfunction as shown by rapid lactic academia increase and mitochondrial histoenzymatic abnormalities.

Efficacy and tolerability of a nucleoside reserve transcriptase inhibitor-sparing combination of lopinavir/ritonavir and efavirenz in HIV-1-infected patients

Article Abstract:

Recommended antiretroviral regimens include a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) component and this class of antiretrovirals has problems such as class cross-resistance and mitochondrial toxicity. The lopinavir/ritonavir-efavirenz combination is associated with a high rate of virologic response and should be compared with more classic NRTI-containing regimens in randomized and controlled clinical trials.

Regulatory dysfunction of the interleukin-7 receptor in CD4 and CD8 lymphocytes from HIV-infected patients-Effects of antiretroviral therapy

Article Abstract:

Studies were conducted to evaluate the expression of the IL-7R alpha chain and to determine the responses of CD4 and CD8 T lymphocytes to IL-7 in three groups of chronically HIV-infected patients. Results reveal that the effects of HAART were less pronounced in patients with undetectable VL but low CD4 counts.
