Motivation, recruitment, and screening of volunteers for a phase I/II HIV preventive vaccine trial in Thailand

Article Abstract:

Volunteers for an HIV vaccine study in Thailand are largely motivated by altruism, particularly those who have donated blood in the past. Researchers surveyed volunteers and found that 56% reported altruistic motives and 24% were motivated by personal medical interests. Sixty-eight percent of blood donors reported altruistic reasons for volunteering. Participants who were willing to be telephoned at home, which may have exposed them to social discrimination, and blood donors were most likely to make and keep appointments for screening tests.

Feasibility of a preventive HIV-1 vaccine cohort among persons attending sexually transmitted disease clinics in Thailand

Article Abstract:

Trials of an AIDS vaccine in Thailand may not be feasible if limited to people visiting a sexually transmitted diseases (STD) clinic. At three STD clinics in Thailand, about one-third of the men and one-fourth of the women agreed to participate in a study of HIV infection. Four percent of the 371 men and 2.5% of the 161 women tested positive for HIV at the beginning of the study. Twelve months later, four more men had acquired the infection but none of the women had. At these rates, more people would need to be included in a vaccine trial.
