Small firms and big ideas

Article Abstract:

The UK Health and Safety Commission's Small Firms' Strategy is designed to address the health and safety requirements of the country's many small businesses. It has a number of key themes, including improving access to health and safety information and working with 'intermediaries' such as local Chambers of Commerce and safety organizations IOSH and RoSPA. This approach has been welcomed by RoSPA, which believes that all small companies would benefit from a simple written health and safety plan.

How to be a good neighbour

Article Abstract:

Large firms can help small firms by sharing their occupational health and safety expertise and resources. The motivation for doing this may be based on humanitarianism but it can also be good for business. Large firms can extend this help to suppliers, contractors, and businesses in the immediate locality. The help may take the form of training, risk assessment and advice, or permission to use company medical services.
