Rhonda Anderson, RN, MPA, CNAA, FAAN, executive vice president at Hartford Hospital, Hartford, CT, feels the most important part of her life journey as a nurse has been the variety of professionals she has met and learning from each of them. Fear of the unknown and unwillingness to do new things are dangerous for a nurse. Real leaders fulfill their purpose by helping others find and fulfill their destinies. Mentoring is an important function. Leadership is based on one person's having a vision and motivating others to buy into it, while knowing one's own self, one's skills, one's abilities.

Profiles of leadership: a dialogue with two nursing revolutionaries

Article Abstract:

Nurses can be agents of change. Karen Ehrat, a nurse-CEO, sees the work of nursing more broadly than the traditional definition would have it, finding answers in business and organizational management. She sees nursing as the key driver in all aspects of healthcare delivery and thinks nursing administrators, physicians and consultants must find balance between the business and professional sides, thinking beyond image. Katherine Vestal, healthcare consultant/nurse, feels that without the experience of care delivery a person may suggest a solution that is unworkable.

Article Abstract:

Nurse executives cannot bury their heads in the sand as healthcare changes, thinking they can avoid change. Contracting out for help for special projects, organizational turnarounds, strategic planning, board/management education, visioning, reengineering initiatives, marketing, and program development. The executive and hired consultants need to have the following qualities/characteristics: competence, courtesy, confidence, concern, consistency, and courage.
