A young woman in college proudly took on her husband's birth name as a way to declare her independence from her parents. She keeps the name after divorcing him but later drops it. Names are a means to connecting with the past but are also a way to liberate oneself from the past.

Husband-and-wife Beverly Bartlett and Jim Turner merged their last names to become the Bartlett Turners. Both wanted to do away with the inequalities and conventions usually associated with marriage. Beverly also said the merger will always remind them that they are a team.
