NHTSA rule puts the brakes on truck crashes

Article Abstract:

The National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) has implemented a new rule that requires the makers of heavy commercial vehicles such as heavy trucks and buses to furnish such vehicles with antilock brake systems (ABS). The rule aims to decrease highway crashes by providing the safety measure to drivers. It is also advantageous to the drivers, the trucking industry and the public. NHTSA, in Mar. 1995, has also given a three-month grace period for vehicles weighing more than 10,000 pounds in gross vehicle weight, to be installed with ABS.

Time to tighten the safety belt

Article Abstract:

The National Safety Belt Coalition reports that the level of safety awareness has risen among motorists and that they readily wear seat belts when they drive. The number of people who wear safety belts has increased to 67% due to driver education programs and law enforcement. All states have mandated that motorists wear safety belts through educational campaigns and checkpoints where police officers instruct drivers on the need to wear belts.
