Natural history of peripheral neuropathy in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus

Article Abstract:

People with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) have an increased risk of developing polyneuropathy. Diabetes is a disorder in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Polyneuropathy is a disorder of the nerves outside of the central nervous system. Researchers studied 133 patients with NIDDM and 144 randomly selected nondiabetic individuals to determine their risks of developing polyneuropathy over five and ten years. At the beginning of the study, 8.3% of the diabetic patients had polyneuropathy, compared to only 2.1% of the nondiabetic people. At the 5-year and 10-year examinations symptoms of neuropathy including pain, absent reflexes and loss of sensation were more common among the diabetic patients. About 42% of the diabetic patients had signs of polyneuropathy after 10 years, compared to approximately 6% of the nondiabetic individuals.

Prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus by changes in lifestyle among subjects with impaired glucose tolerance

Article Abstract:

People who have a high risk of developing type 2, or adult onset, diabetes can cut their risk in half just by changing their lifestyle. This was the conclusion of a study of 522 overweight people with an abnormal glucose tolerance test. Half received counseling to eat a low-fat, high-fiber diet, lose weight, and get more exercise.

Changing habits to delay diabetes

Article Abstract:

People at risk of type 2, or adult-onset, diabetes can reduce their risk substantially by eating a low-fat, high-fiber diet, losing weight, and exercising. However, researchers don't know if this lowered risk will last because most people re-gain any weight they lose.
