New Heart Study a Legacy for the Future

Article Abstract:

Several Mississippi universities hope to create an African-American version of the Framingham Study. The Framingham Study has evaluated the cardiovascular health of the residents of Framinham, Massachusetts since 1948. The Jackson Heart Study will follow 6,500 African Americans living in Mississippi. African Americans have higher death rates from cardiovascular disease than whites, and this is true in both men and women. Participants will also be educated about risk factors and ways they can lower their risk of cardiovascular disease.
