Internal medicine: primary care or high-tech specialty?

Article Abstract:

Physicians who practice internal medicine express differing opinions on whether all internal medicine residents should be trained as generalists. Medical students have been urged to pursue internal medicine, which is considered a type of primary care. However, many internal medicine residents later choose to specialize in branches of internal medicine, such as cardiology or gastroenterology. Some generalists believe they suffer from competition with family medicine.

Doctors should supervise nurses

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Assn has decided that nurse practitioners should be supervised, not work in collaboration, with physicians. This change has been decided upon because many states are expanding the role of nurses in patient care. In some states, nurses will be able to prescribe medication and work with little or no physician supervision after legislation is passed. Few states are decreasing the venue of nurses.
