Serum cholesterol in young men and subsequent cardiovascular disease

Article Abstract:

High blood cholesterol levels early in life appear to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, heart disease and death from cardiovascular disease later in life. Previous studies on middle-aged men have already found a link between blood cholesterol levels and risk of cardiovascular disease, but very few studies have focused on young men. Between 1947 and 1964, blood cholesterol levels were measured in 1,107 men in their early 20s and the men were then followed for 27 to 42 years. The average blood cholesterol level was within the recommended range, and overall the young men were healthy and at low risk for cardiovascular disease. However, blood cholesterol levels measured in the men when they were young strongly predicted their risk of cardiovascular disease when older. Blood cholesterol levels were most significantly linked with the risk of heart attack and least with the risk of angina.

Effects of oral potassium on blood pressure: meta-analysis of randomized controlled clinical trials

Article Abstract:

Increasing dietary potassium may lower blood pressure. Researchers used meta-analysis to review 33 clinical trials assessing the health benefits of potassium supplementation in 2,609 patients. Potassium supplementation reduced systolic blood pressure by an average of 3 millimeters of mercury and diastolic blood pressure an average of 2 millimeters of mercury. Potassium supplementation appeared to be especially beneficial in people who could not reduce their sodium intake.
