AMA decries cutting postpartum stay

Article Abstract:

Physicians are becoming concerned about the effects of short hospital stays on women and their newborn children. Some insurance companies are requiring that when a birth is normal, a mother and child can return home within 24 hours. Physicians worry that there will not be adequate genetic and metabolic screening of the newborn. Physicians and the American Medical Assn want discharge to be based upon clinical not economic decisions.

Pediatricians back responsible condom programs

Article Abstract:

The American Academy of Pediatrics advocates the distribution of condoms to sexually-active high school students to reduce the incidence of unintended pregnancy and reduce the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. The association believes that abstinence is the best method to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, but that condoms and counseling should be available to teens who are already sexually active.
