No time to lose: transplants are not done on a first-come, first-served basis. All patients placed on waiting lists are thoroughly assessed

Article Abstract:

Some patients on a waiting list for organ transplants may receive an organ within two weeks, others have to wait years, and many die whilst on the waiting list. At the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, matching is undertaken there, based on patient condition and urgency, and recipients are prepared for a heart transplant operation before the heart is removed from the body of the donor. Age is not a factor in transplants at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, although those with alcohol induced liver disease must show that they have abstained for at least six months.
