Number of uninsured continues to rise

Article Abstract:

The number of uninsured Americans continues to rise even though unemployment is at record low levels. Most uninsured Americans have jobs, but many employers do not offer health insurance or deduct high premiums from the employee's paycheck. Many employers are forced to do this by insurance companies, which demand higher premiums. After Pres Clinton's health care reform package failed, Congress acted in piecemeal fashion to provide greater coverage for certain groups. However, there are benefits to national health care insurance, and the US and South Africa are the only industrial nations that do not provide it.

The complex process of naming drugs

Article Abstract:

All prescription medications have three names: the chemical name, the generic name, and the brand name. The chemical name describes the chemical structure of the drug compound, but is not generally used in clinical practice. The generic name is created by the US Adopted Name (USAN) Council, applying stringent rules to ensure that the name is not similar to others or misleading. The generic name remains in the public domain, and is not licensed to the drug's maker. The brand name is chosen by the manufacturer in consultation with USAN. Brand names often indicate the drug's function.

The effect of clinical practice guidelines on variations in care

Article Abstract:

Clinical practice guidelines do not always eliminate variations in medical care. There may be too many guidelines on a particular topic, or the guideline may not be well-designed or properly distributed to doctors. Hand-held devices that store this information or provide online access to it may improve their effectiveness.
