Obstructive sleep apnea: implications for cardiac and vascular disease

Article Abstract:

About 20% of all Americans may have mild obstructive sleep apnea and one of every 15 Americans may have more severe obstructive sleep apnea, according to researchers who analyzed 154 articles on obstructive sleep apnea published between 1966 and March, 2003. Obstructive sleep apnea can increase a person's risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Obstructive sleep apnea means a person stops breathing temporarily throughout the night because his or her windpipe or nasal passages are too small.

Incidence of sleep-disordered breathing in an urban adult population: the relative importance of risk factors in the development of sleep-disordered breathing

Article Abstract:

About 16% of the US population will develop sleep apnea over a five-year period and 7% will develop severe sleep apnea, according to a study of 1,149 healthy people who were followed for five years. Older age, male sex, and obesity were risk factors for sleep apnea. Sleep apnea occurs when a person stops breathing temporarily during sleep several times throughout the night.

Inflammation, hypertension, and the metabolic syndrome

Article Abstract:

Inflammation may play a role in high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, according to a study published in 2003. It showed that women who had high blood levels of C-reactive protein were more likely to develop high blood pressure over a period of time than women with normal levels. C-reactive protein is created during inflammation in the body.
