Operative management of ectopic pregnancy: a cost analysis

Article Abstract:

Laparoscopic surgery for ectopic pregnancy appears to cost less than laparotomy, but the cost advantage may disappear when the post-surgical hospital stay is reduced. Laparoscopic surgery is surgery with special instruments inserted through a small incision; laparotomy is standard, abdominal surgery. Researchers compared the hospital costs of 131 laparoscopies and 37 laparotomies. Laparoscopy reduced costs by one-quarter. However, when the costs of intended laparoscopies that had to be converted to laparotomy were included, savings were reduced, and when patients having laparotomy were discharged on day 1 after surgery, the savings disappeared.

Microendoscopic surgery: a comparison of four microendoscopes and a review of the literature

Article Abstract:

Microendoscopes may be used to diagnose and perform minor abdominal surgery. Researchers compared the effectiveness of four different microendoscopes and of a conventional 5 mm laparoscope on 27 patients. The $13,000 Imagyn Microlap microendoscope seemed to offer superior field of vision, adaptability, ease of use, sterilization, and cost. For the money, the 5 mm laparoscope offered the best field of vision. Instruments were used to perform tubal sterilization on 13 women and diagnostic procedures on 14 others. Use of smaller instruments may reduce the need for anesthesia and prevent wound complications.

Recurrence of ovarian endometrioma after laparoscopic excision

Article Abstract:

Laparoscopic surgery seems to be effective in treating endometriosis on the ovary. In a study of 366 women treated with laparoscopic surgery, only 11.7% had a recurrence in the next four years.
