Partners in care

Article Abstract:

A project to provide health care for travellers in Walsall, United Kingdom, is geared to the needs of a mobile population, and offers a range of services, including dental care, immunisation and well woman services. The project involves collaboration between Save the Children Fund, a charity, and Walsall Health Authority. Literacy can be a problem, for example in promoting nutritional awareness, since it means information on labels and in recipes is less accessible. Families carry their own medical records for continuity. Meanwhile, planned legislation may affect travellers' health if they are forced to sites lacking sanitation, health workers fear.

Age-old problem

Article Abstract:

Sri Lanka is struggling to meet the needs of elderly people, although 13% of the population will be over 65 by 2025. There are only three state owned homes for older people, out of a total of 125 homes and there is no nurse training for elderly care. HelpAge Sri Lanka is raising funds and training health care workers in nursing skills to help the elderly to remain in their owns homes.

Older and wiser, but does anyone care?

Article Abstract:

Some 195 people at a 'Nursing Times' debate in spring 1997 voted against the motion of the ex-UK National Health Service director of personnel, Eric Caines, that the elderly do not need to be looked after by qualified medical personnel. Caines, who claimed that nursing care was for people whose health can be restored, had just a dozen supporters.
