Pelvic Organ Support Study (POSST): The distribution, clinical definition, and epidemiologic condition of pelvic organ support defects

Article Abstract:

The distribution of pelvic organ support in a gynecologic clinic population for defining the clinical disease state of pelvic organ prolapse is described and its epidemiologic condition is analyzed. A bell-shaped distribution of pelvic organ support was observed in a gynecologic clinic population and prolapse was found to be correlated with advancing age, Hispanic race, increase in the body mass index and increase in the weight of the vaginally delivered fetus.

The effect of pregnancy and mode of delivery on the prevalence of urinary and fecal incontinence

Article Abstract:

The relative effects of pregnancy and mode of delivery on the prevalence of urinary and fecal incontinence are determined. Results reveal that risk of urinary or fecal incontinence was increased with pregnancy but was not reduced by cesarean section as compared to pregnancy with a vaginal delivery.
