Physician attitudes toward human immunodeficiency virus testing in pregnancy

Article Abstract:

A significant percentage of doctors may favor mandatory HIV testing of all pregnant women to increase detection and treatment of their infants. Researchers conducted a survey of obstetricians and gynecologists to determine their attitudes regarding HIV testing and their experience with HIV-infected patients. Sixty-four percent of the doctors agreed with mandatory HIV testing of all pregnant women. Most (88%) doctors thought mandatory testing would reduce transmission of HIV from mothers to their infants. Mandatory HIV testing could save money by preventing HIV transmission to infants.

Alveolar-arterial oxygen gradient in acute pulmonary embolism in pregnancy

Article Abstract:

The alveolar-arterial oxygen gradient test may be inaccurate in the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism in pregnant women. Pulmonary embolism is the blockage of arteries in the lungs by blood clots traveling in the bloodstream. The alveolar-arterial oxygen gradient is the difference in oxygen content between blood in the arteries and blood in the lungs, and generally rises in pulmonary embolism. Researchers performed the test in 17 pregnant women with pulmonary embolism, and found that 58% had a normal test result. Other tests should be used to diagnose embolism in pregnant women.

Hemodynamic patterns of women with chronic hypertension during pregnancy

Article Abstract:

A rapid ejection time may be an indication of chronic hypertension during pregnancy. This sign means the woman's arteries are chronically constricted. It can be measured using a non-invasive cardiovascular monitor.
