Physician-controlled HMOs on the horizon for Britain's NHS

Article Abstract:

The Conservative Party-led British government and British general practitioners (GPs) are proposing a restructuring of England's National Health Service, hoping to shift the management of nationalized health care from the centralized state to a collection of GP-controlled HMOs spread throughout the country. General practitioner Dr. Howard Freeman, a vocal proponent of the restructuring, who himself runs a state-supported pilot group operating under the new GP credos, believes that groups of GPs should receive annual capitation payments from the NHS.

Britain to dismantle National Health Service reforms

Article Abstract:

Tony Blair's new Labour Party government in the United Kingdom has announced a health policy to undo the 'internal market' reforms of the preceding Conservative government. The Labour government has accused the Conservatives of replacing an egalitarian National Health Service with a two-tiered system under the concept of hospital trusts. The new legislative package calls for more funding for illness treatment and health problems prevention, including the banning of all handguns in the UK by 1998.

Enhancing autonomy: fund-holding system puts Britain's GPs in the financial drivers' seat

Article Abstract:

British general practitioners (GPs) are feeling positive about fund-holding, which gives GPs greater autonomy by allowing them to allocate about 20% of what the National Health Service (NHS) pays for comprehensive treatment of patients. GPs who underspend their allotted budgets may spend the remainder on patient services or practice-related items. The NHS plans to offer fund-holding to nearly all British GPs.
