Practice Magic: how caring for a pro team helped one group grow

Article Abstract:

A sports medicine clinic can derive excellent public relations and high profits from treating a professional sports team. However, several special considerations must be addressed in such a practice. For example, treating a professional team involves extra time, personnel and liability insurance. The clinic must know everyone on the team and in the front office. In addition, physicians must treat athletes aggressively but safely. The practice of the Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic is discussed, including its work with underfunded high school teams.

Road map to forming a group

Article Abstract:

Physicians who wish to start group practice must commit themselves to spending sufficient planning time, say consultants who specialize in services to medical groups. Especially in a small group, the individual physicians who join the organization should make sure they are compatible. Then a steering committee must be given the power to make decisions including legal, accounting and financial management of the group. Examples of problems that arise in group practice are outlined.

Pay for performance: group practices find paychecks a good way to change behavior

Article Abstract:

Managed care has changed the way physicians get paid. Those physicians who follow managed care rules and practice more efficient medicine will most likely earn what they did before. Compensation systems are based on such factors as unit profitability, patient volume, hours worked and overall company profitability.
