Practised advice

Article Abstract:

Investigation by occupational health nurses into causes of fatigue and depression following day surgery revealed unrealistic recovery expectations. Most assumed that day surgery indicated a minor problem and did not appreciate the effects of anaesthesia. Many returned to work too soon. Most patients agreed more information on post-operative care should have been given at the outset in order to plan a structured return to normal duties. The practice nurse could advise on the appropriate strategy.

Advice to take home

Article Abstract:

Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, England has devised an information leaflet on post-oesophageal surgery care at home. About 36 discharged patients received a questionnaire on advice they had been given before discharge and their current eating and sleeping patterns. Eighteen patients responded. At least 33% wished they had asked more questions before discharge. Advice in the leaflet has drawn on the answers, comments and suggested advice received.

Analysis of advice given to patients after hysterectomy

Article Abstract:

A survey of hysterectomy patients found that some post-surgery advice was vague. Many patients are likely to experience constipation, and although 62% of information leaflets mentioned that likelihood, dietary advice was lacking. Only 30% of the leaflets mentioned the possibility of urinary infection and, although fatigue was mentioned in 50% of the leaflets, most did not indicate how long this could be a problem.
