Predictable and preventable?

Article Abstract:

World Health Organization predicts that the number of AIDS cases will rise sharply in future, and if they prove correct, current policies will not be able to control the epidemic. The world had 611,589 AIDS cases until January 1993, with the US accounting for 40%, Africa 35%, and Asia 0.4%. The Cox Committee predicts that AIDS is spreading by heterosexual transmission from original risk groups across the UK population in general. The history and cause of AIDS particularly in the UK and US are presented. The effect of HIV, and different methods in predicting AIDS case numbers are also discussed.

The use of the pleuro-peritoneal shunt

Article Abstract:

Recurrent pleural effusions can severely limit a patient's quality of life, and pleural aspiration only gives temporary relief. A pleuro-peritoneal shunt offers a secure solution, giving patients more freedom of choice. The shunt is made from soft silicone rubber and comprises a peritoneal catheter, a pleural catheter and a pump chamber. The pump chamber contains two one way valves, whereby excess pleural fluid is expressed through the peritoneal catheter. Pumping can be performed by a nurse initially, but the patient and carer should be encouraged to actively participate.

Peritoneal port offers new approach to HIV therapy

Article Abstract:

The speed with which new treatments are being developed for the care of HIV patients is affected by research carried out by nurses. Drug delivery systems are continually being revised for the treatment of HIV. The use of intraperitoneal therapy allows nurses to direct anti-HIV drugs directly into the lymphatic system where the HIV virus is mostly located. Catheters are used to deliver antiretroviral drugs via a subcutaneous port located on the skin.
