Prescribing for Seniors

Article Abstract:

Many elderly people are undertreated for common medical conditions. Although concerns about overusing prescriptions drugs in older patients are valid, the elderly with coexisting medical conditions are often untreated, or receive substandard care. Only 42-57% of older patients receive beta-blocker drugs following heart attack, despite their clear benefits in reducing mortality. Hormone replacement therapy can prevent osteoporosis, but many postmenopausal women are not so treated. A study in veterans found that 40% continued to have elevated blood pressure despite regular doctor visits for hypertension-related care.
