Prevalence and treatment of mental disorders, 1990 to 2003

Article Abstract:

The 1990s saw enormous change in the mental health care system in the United states, but little is known about the changes in the prevalence or rate of treatment of mental disorders. It is concluded that despite an increase in the rate of treatment, most patients with a mental disorder did not receive treatment and therefore, continued efforts are needed to obtain data on effectiveness of treatment in order to increase the use of effective treatments.

Managing behavioral health in Medicaid

Article Abstract:

States that decide to subcontract Medicaid mental health services to a managed care plan should follow up all patients after the transition to make sure they are receiving their medications. When Tennessee's Medicaid program transferred these services to managed care plans, many patients did not continue receiving their medications. It is especially important for patients with serious mental illness to continue taking their medications.

Effect of a mental health "carve-out" program on the continuity of antipsychotic therapy

Article Abstract:

States that transfer the provision of mental health services to behavioral health organizations may be placing some of their residents at risk, according to a study of 8,151 patients in Tennessee. When this state's Medicaid program shifted mental health services to TennCare Partners, many patients experienced gaps in service and were unable to get the drugs they needed. In some cases, this situation lasted for months.
